Operation

It is recommended that this tool be run immediately above the bit on drilling or completion operations. If there is anticipated drilling of landing or float collars then the appropriate milling tool (string, watermelon, etc) should be added to create the proper dress assembly. For completion operations, it is recommended that a full-body casing scraper be spaced to reach bottom of all casings. Tough Boy™ Brush Tools can be spaced above to further scour and prepare casing ID’s for fluid exchange and production equipment. The Tough Boy™ design is available from 4 ½” tubing to 20” casing.

Note: Tough Boy™ Scraper Blades cover 100% of casing wall when reciprocating and can be used for any application calling for rotating or reciprocating. The design of the blades allow maximum fluid flow that will carry out solids debris from the scraper action introducing them into the fluid stream.

Tough Boy™ Debris Removal Tools

Tough Boy™ Waste Retriever

U.S. Patent #6951251B2

Waste Retriever

Description / Application

The Bilco Tough Boy™ waste retriever series are tools designed to capture well debris. The tools classified as riser waste retrievers have a large capacity basket capable of holding quantities to 14 US gal (2.2 ft3). This riser tool was designed in recognition that even at high pump rates only relatively low annular velocities are achieved in the riser. This design features screened drainage for positive debris removal, venturi jet porting to enhance debris capture through fluid manipulation and a robust solid mandrel design with 6 5/8-in reg. tool joint connections for superior torsion and tensile strength.

The Tough Boy™ Standard Waste Retriever is for instances where a waste retriever run will be done after circulation and mud conditioning to check for mud cleanliness.

In the dynamic environment of deepwater completions a higher degree of cleanliness is required to prevent non-productive down time. This tool will retrieve debris that has been loosened but not circulated out, which otherwise fall down the well bore to be a potential fouling problem.

Debris from Waste Retriever IMAG0019

Operation

The Bilco Tough Boy™ Waste Retriever is generally run above the Bilco Tough Boy™ Riser Brush Tool as an integrated approach to clean and validate well bore cleanliness. This tool combination is most effective when spaced above the lower marine riser package (LMRP), and is exposed to all circulation related to the clean-up and displacement operation.
The Tough Boy™ Standard Waste Retriever can be run in conjunction with a Tough Boy™ Brush below it it to assure tubing wall cleanliness or on a check run to provide assurance that the circulation operations have removed all potentially formation damaging debris.
The Tough Boy™ Riser Waste Retriever and Tough Boy™ Standard Waste Retriever can be run in all fluids. it becomes more effective as carrying capacities during fluid exchange operations decrease due to lower fluid densities.

Tough Boy™ Filter Tool

Junk Basket

Description/Application

The Bilco Tough Boy™ Tools Filter Tool is designed to capture particulate matter that has been dislodged as a result of a successful wellbore clean-out operation. Run in conjunction with a variety of casing scrapers, brush tools, jetting tools and a flow check sub this filtering device will minimize debris falling back into the wellbore. The Tough Boy™ Filter Tool, jetting assembly and/or casing scraper or brush tool should be run in conjunction with the wear bushing retriever in a single run to save rig time and lower completion or work-over costs.

Operation

In operations to retrieve the wellhead wear bushing, the robust Bilco Tough Boy™ Tools Filter Tool should lead the clean-up retrieval assembly in the hole with a work string stand spaced between a flow check sub and well head jetting tool. The Bilco Tough Boy™ Wear Bushing Retriever should be spaced above the clean-up tools in the work string. As the wellhead wear bushing is retrieved the exact distance is pulled to place the Bilco Tough Boy™ Jetting Tool across the wellhead profile. The jetting operation will dislodge debris and clean the wellhead profile in preparation for the hanger assembly.
This clean up assembly with a scraper and/or brush tool instead of the jetting tool can be used to remove heavy debris created during a scraping or brushing operation in the casing that could settle on and foul completion equipment further down the well. Any loosened or suspended solids will be filtered through the screen mesh and retrieved when pulling the clean-up string out of the hole.

Tough Boy™ Fluid Manipulation Tools

Tough Boy™ Riser Jet Tool

riser_jet

Description/Application

Bilco's Tough Boy™ Riser Jet Tool is a solid mandrel valve with a 16” OD for use in 18 ¾” or larger BOP’s and risers. It can be run in the clean-out/displacement string or can be introduced after short tripping the proper distance to tag the wellhead for depth control. This tool is used to hydro blast the BOP cavities, removing lodged solids/debris and introducing them into the fluid stream while increasing annular velocities in the marine riser. There are 18 .625” ID jet nozzles that direct fluid up, out, and down to thoroughly dislodge gunk and debris. The number of nozzles and direction of flow can be configured to accommodate surface equipment and hydraulic concerns.

Operation

When the tool is positioned at the wellhead and rates have been established through the bit the Tough Boy™ Riser Jet Tool is activated by dropping a retrievable dart and shifting the tool to the open position. This position directs all of the flow through the jetting nozzles. The tool is then rotated slowly and reciprocated the appropriate distance to cover the stack. At maximum achievable flow rate down work string plus maximum boost line rate the debris is introduced into the fluid stream and lifted into the riser. A Bilco Tough Boy™ Riser Waste Retriever is generally run a double (64’) above the jet tool to accomplish complete removal of the lifted solids. After the jetting operation the tool is deactivated by dropping a second retrievable dart, which redirects the flow down the work string, back to the bit. Fluid exchange operation can continue without the need for a designated trip to remove the jet and waste retriever tools.

Tough Boy™ ByPass Jet Tool

Description/Application

Bilco’s Tough Boy™ Jet Tools are a solid mandrel valve with a 6 3/4” OD for use in 9 5/8” and a 10 3/4" OD for 13 3/8"or larger casing. This valve can be run in the clean-out/displacement string to jet the wellhead or provide drill string to annulus communication as a By Pass/Circulating Sub. This tool is used to hydro blast the wellhead or BOP cavities removing lodged solids/debris and introducing them into the fluid stream while increasing annular velocities in the marine riser. The 6.75" OD has 4 jet nozzles that direct fluid out to thoroughly dislodge gunk and debris. Each nozzle has an ID of .625” with a total flow area of 1.483 square inches. The 10 3/4" OD has 12 jet nozzles with a total flow area of 4.440 square inches using jet nozzles with a .615" ID.

Operation

When tool is positioned at the well head and rates have been established through the bit the jet tool can be activated by dropping a steel ball and shifting the tool to the open position. This position directs all flow to the jetting nozzles. The tool is then rotated slowly and reciprocated the appropriate distance. At maximum achievable flow rate plus maximum boost line rate the debris is introduced into the fluid stream and lifted into the riser. A Bilco Tough Boy™ Waste Retriever is strategically placed above the jet tool to accomplish complete removal of the lifted solids. After the jetting operation the tool is deactivated by dropping a second steel ball, which redirects the flow down the work string back to the bit. Fluid exchange operation can continue without the need for a designated trip to remove the jet and waste retriever tools.

Bilco Tough Boy™ Negative Test Packer

NTP Series Test Packer Dimensional Chart

Description/Application

Bilco's Tough Boy™ Negative Test Packer (NTP) is designed to be activated and packed off by set down weight after landing on the liner top.

  • The NTP is designed to work in conjunction with Bilco well bore Tough Boy clean-up tool line.
  • When used with wellbore clean up tools, circulation is initiated and the test string is manipulated while following the operating procedures for the clean-up tool(s) used.
  • After casing clean-up operations work string is landed on landing nut or the landing shoe located on the wellbore clean-up tool below the packer.
  • Set-down weight is applied to activate the packer.
  • A minimum of 55,000-lb set down weight is applied to close the packer equalizing valve and set the packer sealing element.

Operation

The proper packer size is chosen with regard to the production casing size and weight. Packer activation is achieved by using approximately 20,000-lb set down weight. Once activated a total set down weight of 55,000-lb should fully pack off the specially designed sealing element on the packer. Since the packer contains no casing slips test pressures create an end area piston force equal to the post setting effective end area times the test pressure. This force must be offset with pressure in the annulus above the packer and/or additional set down weight.

The Bilco Tough Boy™ NTP series packer is designed to be run after the casing has been properly cleaned or can be run in conjunction with a separate wellbore cleanout tool such as the Bilco Blade/Brush Type Tough Boy™ Casing Scraper. When run with the appropriate Bilco wellbore cleanout tool it is recommended to lower the packer to depth and land on the liner top PBR. The drill string should then be manipulated while following the operating procedure for the specific cleanout tool used.
